I’ve got new posable dolls in the shop and I’m so excited to finally be able to tell you about them. The two above are Louise and Anne and I just listed a third tonight. But first let me tell you a little about how I made them.
I think as an artist is important to always be pushing yourself, trying new things and challenging yourself to grow and make better art, which is what these dolls are all about for me.
It’s been about a year now since I started doll making and I’m really happy with how far I’ve come and what I’ve achieved so far. I love the deep, soulful eyes I’ve managed to create, I love how far I’ve come in costume-making, especially with such little prior sewing experience, but there was always something that I wished I could improve on.
I really wanted to give them more movement, more posability. I wanted to make them seem more life-like.
So after thinking on it for months I finally set out to make a new kind of doll.
There’s not a ton of information on how to make a doll like this so I thought I’d share a few quick snapshots of my process.
First I made an armature out of wire.
Then I bulked it out with tinfoil, holding it altogether with masking tape.
And then I sculpted the head, hands, and feet.
Then I added padding to the arms, legs and torso. Some people cover these parts with a sort of “skin” made from stretchy material, but I figured this was unnecessary since I’d be covering it with clothing anyway.
I then had to alter my dress pattern to fit the new dolls as well as design some pantaloons. I also made custom doll stands for each doll so they can either sit or stand.
I think they turned out great, don’t you??
Oh and here’s Esther, new to the shop tonight:
